Funding is available between €5,000 and €50,000 per project. The total budget available for this call is at least €676,000, dedicated to small and medium-size R&D grants for open source technology. Project results must be made available under a free and open source licence.

NGI TALER is a project funded by the European Commission and the Swiss State, aiming to develop and roll out a secure, transparent and privacy-preserving electronic payment system. The call funds contributions that support the development of GNU Taler and its ecosystem, including: • Development of new capabilities for GNU Taler • Creation of auxiliary tools • Improvement of user experience • Integration of GNU Taler into FOSS applications and open standards • Development of P2P micropayment solutions • Improvement of infrastructure components, such as merchant backends • Development of low-cost, secure and resource-efficient digital payment solutions The aim is to support technologies that protect payer privacy, while ensuring transparency for merchants and contributing to an open and sustainable digital economy.
Eligibility
The call is open to SMEs, academic actors, public sector entities, nonprofits, communities and individuals. Eligible projects must contribute to the objectives of NGI TALER and develop free and open source solutions for digital payments, privacy, open infrastructures and a trustworthy internet. Proposals must comply with the eligibility criteria in the Guide for Applicants and publish project results under a free and open source licence.

NGI TALER builds on GNU Taler, a digital payment system developed by the GNU community and Taler Systems SA with support from the NGI initiative. The system offers privacy for people making payments and transparency for merchants, contributing to a safer and fairer model for online payments. Applicants may submit new ideas, including out-of-the-box projects, as long as they contribute to the topic of the call and meet the eligibility criteria.
