With the area having a strong tradition in agriculture, manufacturing of wood and wood products and mining and quarrying, the industries that contribute most to the county’s economy now are the manufacturing of furniture and wood products, of electronic equipments and components, wearing apparel and leather goods, the food and beverages sector and the maufacturing of metal products. Situated on the northern edge of Romania and bordering the Ukraine, Maramureș County has the largest mountainous surface of all counties in the North-West region, offering a wide array of picturesque landscapes. The wooden churches of Maramureș have been included on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1999. After being a sprawling mining community for a long time, the county is steadily shifting toward capitalizing on its deep touristic potential.
